Senior League or Youth Big Barrel?

Senior League or Youth Big Barrel?

What does RBI stand for again? A "can of corn" is what exactly? And, of course, what in the heck is Senior League baseball?!

We get it. There's a lot to keep up with when it comes to Little League baseball. And, that's including exactly what to call it.

You might have heard your little All-Star's league referred to as Youth Big Barrel Baseball and/or Senior League. But, which one is it? You'll notice this on JustBats too, as Senior League bats can be found under the Youth Big Barrel Baseball Bats landing page.

But, Youth Big Barrel is Senior League. And, Senior League is Youth Big Barrel. The reason for the two names?

Little League Baseball has different age divisions. So, children--usually under the age of 12--play with different rules. The smaller kids can learn the fundamentals of the game without having to work about the ability to lead-off or steal as the pitcher breaks. And, of course, shorter paths to the bases.

But, once a child reaches 12, there are new divisions in Little League Baseball. They include:

  • Junior League (12 to 14 year olds)
  • Senior League (13 to 16 year olds)
  • Big League (17 to 18 year olds)

And, that's where the Senior League name comes from. Since the Senior League is the most popular division for teenage players, the term Senior League is used more.

So, why is the Youth Big Barrel name used? That's because it's the type of bat that is usually used in the Senior League.

These are bats used by players who play in youth leagues that allow bats with barrels larger than 2 1/4 inches in diameter. A youth big barrel bat can have a barrel diameter of either 2 5/8 inches or 2 3/4 inches, and generally has a length to weight ratio between -5 and -12.

Most Youth Big Barrel bats are now USSSA approved, but they also--of course--are almost all approved for Senior League play.
